Avatar: The Last Airbender RPG

420 years after the fall of Ozai, decades of tranquility have brought about an era where peace is no longer only a mere philosophical abstraction. However beyond the grasp of the Four Nations, a long lost legacy resurfaces.

Zhekt Garasu

HP: 92,459/100,000

It wasn’t supposed to feel like this – the rush of victory wasn’t supposed to feel so ominous and cold.  Threatening shadows seem to watch from every corner. There was no safe place to rest.

What is this hell?  Adeza had no answer.

The corridor folds in on itself as he passes through the doorway, becoming narrower with each step.  His heart races wildly in his chest as he images the walls closing as he’s inches from the end, crushing him between unmovable stone slabs. Zhekt is forced to reflect on his regret at never learning the other side of his element.  He was of the air and sand – a rock was too cumbersome and hard. He needed to flow. He needed to be free.  He needed to get through this passage and onto his next opponent.

Toward the end of the long corridor, he has to turn his body sideways and shuffle step by step.  Sweat covers him entirely and he feels sticky and itchy everywhere the cloth is knotted. He can’t shake the fear that hastens his breath either, and as he passes into the next courtyard he stops hesitantly.  There’s no sound – eerily, nothing at all.

Heaving the heavy demonic arm through the narrow doorway made him forget most of his anxiety – it took several minutes and hefty retching to pull it through, not to mention the chunk of meat that stayed wedged and eventually ripped off.

With a shrug, Zhekt pulls himself off the ground and walks to the centre of the courtyard, dragging the arm like a child with a blanket – absently and favourably at the same time. The silent barrier shatters as he steps forward and the sound of crying infants alarms him greatly.

Turning toward the spear, he can’t tell if the sound was real or in his mind.  The mouths and eyes of the children do not move, but their dying screams seem forever etched on their faces.  Zhekt shakes his head and closes his eyes.      No. She’s trying to speak to him as well, but he can’t even hear her.

NO.

The flag sags in the absence of wind and he lifts it to read the warning.

NO!  Zhekt shutters angrily.  But, whose voice was that?  Adeza was not speaking for him, nor was she answering – What is this place?! – Who else is speaking to me?

Sanity teeters as he flashes blue eyes between exits. This wasn’t the time to lose himself. The bodies, the blood, the infants – it began to remind him of another place and another time when he’d seen that city drowned.  And somehow, he finds his centre.

Dropping the arm to the ground, Zhekt sits and crosses his legs at the same time.  Closing his eyes tightly, he balls his hands into fists and brings his knuckles to rest together in front of himself.

Must slow heartrate, breathing – must stop running in my head – must find… must find centre!

His breathing slows, he repeats the words over and over in a voice he’s never heard before and when his mind finally calms and he can’t feel the shadowed eyes on him anymore, he stands again.  Gaze fixed directly ahead, he nods once.  Taking the demonic arm by the talon once more, he drags the mass around the pile of bodies and heads north.

Whatever you are, you won’t add me to your collection.  You can be part of mine.

Spoiler:
The Labyrinth of Champions

You travel down the narrow tunnel, dragging that massive arm behind you.  You can feel it weighing you down but you are completely adamant of taking it as a trophy.  For it you are brave, you are determined.  It shows qualities.  You will be rewarded when your time comes for your perseverance, worry not Champion.  For now though, focus on getting out of here alive.

You hear cackling behind you.  Something laughs its way down the hallway, it passes by you but you can't see it.  It echoes as it comes, and echoes as it leaves.  You hear the cackling for moments even after the passing sound leaves the area.  It leads straight down the hallway towards...something.  Probably another courtyard though so, just be careful okay Champion?

Who knows what else you'll find in this damn labyrinth of hell.  Who knows what dark secrets live within--SOMETHING IS ON YOUR FOOT!  Oh, okay, it's just a...moving pile of green slime.  Right, start running or kill it.  Either way, it's kinda creepy.  It looks like its trying to mate with your toes but it's not going to get very far.  You're not even sure if it has genitalia but you're not sticking around to find out.

Keep going Champion, right down the hallway.  Right down towards your next boss, or treasure.  We're not very sure in here you know.  Good luck with whatever it is you do find!

Oh wait! What's this?? Etched into the side of the wall. You can just barely see it but you read it. The language is old, primitive, and some words you cannot translate but most of it is similar enough to modern Common that you can make out the gist of it.

"Those who wish to challenge fate,
To a jumbled shout walk strait.
Sunset fires in dexteree,
Find where Zul'Drak used to sleep.
At the high place near the skies,
Look for other watchful eyes.
Sleep not ‘neath the darkpine trees,
Be on your guard, take not your ease.
Voyage when the daylight dims,
Danger in the water swims.
Make no sound with spear or sword,
Lest you wake the Ing'mar Horde
Shades of creatures who have died,
Bones of warriors who have tried.
Shrink not from the barren land,
Look below from where you stand.
This is where a stone may fall and make no sound at all.
Those who cross and live to tell,
See the old man and the bell.
Face the lord who points the way,
Heat like noon on summers day,
Death will open up its grave.
Who goes there...? None but the brave."

Well...that's...uh...good luck figuring out. No time to dawdle though Champion, keep moving! You'll have to if you want to make it to the end in time.

Zhekt Garasu

HP: 92,459/100,000

Darkness embraces Zhekt tighter than his grip on the black talon.  It sucks the air from his lungs and leaves him dumbfounded. It stole the direction of his steps and battered him with sound.  Laughter – tormenting him with its guttural glee – shapelessly rolls above him. The echoes bounce from several directions as he takes another step.  He’d been facing ahead when the light vanished, so he was certain he’d find it again.

Instead of hearing his own step, a flurry of scraping limbs shudder the narrow passageway with noise and he can almost feel the massive body moving past him.  Air stirs and follows the creature, if it even exists, and he takes several short steps to follow.  Light begins to bloom somewhere deep ahead of him as he follows the current and begins to illuminate the walls on either side of Zhekt.  The heavy arm continues to shred against the stone walkway, leaving a trail of torn flesh and black blood everywhere he goes.

Something moves in the corner of his eye and pulsates with the light behind it.  Before he can turn to face the anomaly, it mounts his foot and begins to work its way into the cloth wrapping. Hissing through his teeth, Zhekt flicks his toes upward and sharply raises and drops his leg. Sand lifts beneath the strange gooey… thing… and Zhekt uses his index and middle finger to point the mass into the air in front of him.  The weird green blob seemed harmless – curious, even.

Do you have to consider killing everything before discovering its worth? She was back – Adeza hadn’t left him.

With a heavy breath of relief, Zhekt turns his wrist, palm to the sky, and flicks the goopy, green thing over his shoulder and onto the arm behind him. If it was inclined to adventure, he didn’t mind bringing it along. Maybe he’d find one of the other fools lost in this maze and add them to his pile.

The fictions playing in his head – the fantasies that would never be – halt when he reaches the strange markings on the wall.  Barely visible as he approaches, they seem like scratches against the stone, made by some angry beast. When he turns to face them, finally flush with their arrangement on the wall, he’s surprised. Shapes begin to glow in several colours, separating segments and words.  It begins to make sense to him, the words come together and the formations become familiar.  Adeza sings the words quietly over and over as he reads them.  He doesn’t need to remember them because she will remember for him.

Themes begin to emerge among the lines of her song, forming ideas of the trails he may have to face yet. He grins again, turning toward his new direction with renewed tenacity.  Gripping the talon with his left hand, he drags it and walks on.

Spoiler:
The Labyrinth of Champions

Second Shadow of I’m-kala, The Queen of Drak’Tharon
Origin: Cursed Queen of Drak'Tharon
Motive: Protect the Kingdom
Threat Level: Medium
Number: x1
Damage: 7500

HP: 15,000/15,000
Spoiler:

As you exit the small tunnel of a corridor, you struggled a bit to pull the taloned claw through the doorway. Unfortunately, the dragging hand catches in the doorway. You manage to free it, but it takes much yanking to pull it out from between the sliding stone door and the wall it was trying to slam itself against. When you finally yank it out, you walk into the next courtyard to face your next obstacle.

You look up and face a laugh, cackling, howling demon.  She is half-naked, flying on black feathered wings and glowing in an unholy way.  She wears a heavy iron helm and carries a sword at her side.  She looks like Warrior Angel.  She introduces herself as the former Queen of Drak'Tharon.  She too is cursed and warped and twisted by the curse that sleeps within the dead Kingdom.  She is neither alive or dead, but she is there before you and that's enough reason to attack her.

She swoops at you like a raven, laughing mirthlessly as she watches you realize she was the spirit that laughed at you.  She seems to be semi-see through, and you're unsure if she's a shade, a ghost or just a trick of the light, but you know that sword is probably going to hurt anyway, so you do your best to dodge as she swings at you.

Well, at least we know where the laughing came from now. And I guess you also know what they mean by "a jumbled shout." More like a wicked cackle. Oh well, old rhymes weren't always accurate were they? Have fun Champion.

Zhekt Garasu

HP: 92,131/100,000

Wrestling the arm through doorways seemed to be a regular practice now, but it didn’t slow Zhekt very much. It was leaving a trail in case he became lost or disoriented – it would help him get through this, one way or another.

The wicked laughter causes Zhekt to shudder, but he is frozen in awe at the sight above him. The poem continued to play in his mind, sung to him by the phantom voice in his head. Dark wings fold as the haunting creature descends and Zhekt can’t move his feet.

What a beautiful nightmare…

The ghostly blade is held firmly in her grip as she swoops over him and the edge rends the cloth from his right shoulder.  The glancing blow does little damage, but it’s enough to stir him from his hypnotic admiration. Regardless of the magnificence of the creature, it was clear she meant to stop him from reaching the centre of this place.

As he recoils from the force the blade, cloth bands fall away again. Zhekt releases the talon and lunges forward, rolling further into the courtyard. The Dark Queen gracefully arcs through the air once more and as she turns toward Zhekt once more he raises his right fist.

Bracing his exposed shoulder with his left hand, he patiently waits for the ghastly witch to face him. The cloth around his arm had loosened without the tension from his shoulder – it wouldn’t hold for long, but he only needed one shot for this to work.

With only one piece of armour, I’m afraid you’ve told me more than you wanted, love. That other voice – that guttural male rasp – chuckles mildly.

Zhekt hisses air through his teeth and clenches his fist suddenly.  Cloth explodes from his shoulder to his elbow, fraying and falling away around him.  The sand that had encased it, as well as most of the grains on his forearm, blast away from his body.  The force of the burst causes his body to recoil again – the sand gathers in the air as it hurls itself toward the Dark Queen, focusing into a flat bullet as it reaches her helmet.

Spoiler:
The Labyrinth of Champions

Third Shadow of I’m-kala, The Queen of Drak’Tharon
Origin: Cursed Queen of Drak'Tharon
Motive: Protect the Kingdom
Threat Level: Medium
Number: x1
Damage: 7500

HP: 15,000/15,000
Spoiler:

The Queen watches with curiosity as the young man bursts sand from beneath the bandages on his armour.  She smiles as she comes to understand it is an attack.  It is too slow for her.  She is fast with her wings.  Faster than a Great Raven.  Faster than the greatest swordsman in Drak'Tharon.  She spins out of the way, using her wings to twirl about like a pretty butterfly of death.  Laughing the whole way.

With a cackle, I'm-kala decides to add insult to injury and use her sword to cut through the torrent of sand, causing it to fall to pieces on the ground.  She's like a cat playing with its food.  She wants to enjoy every minute of this young man's torment.  She is unaware that it may soon come back to bite her.  That her playful nature and overconfidence may yet be her undoing.  It was once before.

When she was a beautiful Queen, and in her lust for power she did the unspeakable.  She forced her husband to go as far as murder and genocide for power.  To give the Kingdom over to the Ancient Ones.  The Old Gods.  Egged on by promises of unlimited power and beauty by their royal advisor, Verimethras, and the Court Enchanter and Seer, Thrangr Zim'gar-gul.  That was the beginning of the end.  She could still remember it like a whisper in the back of her mind.

"You will not regret this, your majesty...you will have unlimited power.  Your Kingdom will rule over the whole world.  It will span continents.  My...powers...they tell me so."

The old Enchanter, with his missing eye and deformed, hunched features toiled over the sacrificial table.  Bodies were piled up in the room by the hundreds.  It smelled of rot and decay, there was not a single floor stone that was not covered in blood or gore.  Yet it was still not enough.

"And what, Enchater, must we give in return?"

The old Enchanter gave a cold, dark laugh.  He turned towards the Queen, removing his black, moth-eaten hood.  His eyes glowed green with a dark, corrupted power.  Blood covered his robes and plastered his arms up to his elbows.

"Everything."

These visions flash in your mind as well, Champion, for reasons you are unable to explain.  Slowly the story of Drak'Tharon unfolds itself to you.  Slowly you begin to understand how this place came to be so accurs'd.  So warped and twisted and evil.  Power, and the lust for it.  It was the downfall of everyone here.  Not just any power though; the kind that can only be granted by a God.  A False God.  An Old God.

I'm-kala does not let up though, now is not the time to remember.  Now is the time to defend.  She is coming at you again, like a great bird of prey seeking to destroy its prey and carry it home to feed on.  Light on your feet Champion; do not falter now!

Zhekt Garasu
HP: 84,991/100,000

Vicious laughter is the only sound he hears anymore – that infectious sound ricocheting from all corners of his mind.  Zhekt’s eyes sharpen as the beautiful nightmare cleaves the empty air and cackles once more. She moves with her dark wings faster than he can move a single grain. The blur between her motions is as disorienting as the laughter, and he realizes too late that together they have hypnotized him.  Black wings flutter once and she dives head-first toward Zhekt. The bullet splits cleanly as she passes through it with her blade and the sandbender can only widen his eyes in awe.

A…deza…?  The confusion of the voices in his mind yields no answer.  This creature could not be his Deity, and yet she seemed closer than anything to a true form.

Shades of green cover everything Zhekt can see – the illusions were taking him once more, and he couldn’t resist.  His desire to know – to see behind this ethereal curtain – grew with every test. Soon, the centre of the maze would mean less to him than all the secrets in its corridors.  Knowledge like this always created a hunger.

Lost in the ghastly embrace of someone else’s dream, he is helpless against the attack.  The force of Im-kala’s powerful dive was astounding.  Her helmet connects with Zhekt’s abdomen and knocks the air from his lungs. Driven deeper into the vision, he becomes completely limp as his body sails through the courtyard, away from his coveted demon arm.

The stone floor breaks his fall, his body tumbles twice and his arms and legs slap the floor with a painful sound. The final words ring through his mind, chanted by Adeza’s calm voice. She recites them in addition to lines she has chosen from the poem in the hallway.

Sunset fires in dexteree, find where Zul'Drak used to sleep. Power of the False God, Lust of the Lost.

Color fades, and so does the eerie green light. The courtyard returns to Zhekt, as well as the pain of his fall. Adeza relentlessly repeats the lines, urging him to stand with the intensity of her voice.  With a click of his tongue, Zhekt rolls onto his feet and stands upright.  Breathing heavily, he can hear the wings change direction once more, ready to dive and finish him. She was too fast to hit from a distance, he didn’t dare draw the chakram either – the only way he’d beat her would be to take her power.

Zhekt slows his breathing and watches the witch slice through air with sharp movements.  She dips lower, rises higher, and as her white form bends and her black wings fold, he exhales sharply and jabs the empty air with both fists.  His middle and index fingers extend together while the rest stay folded.  Thumbs held high, he uses each to aim his fingers.  With two audible cracks, he bends both thumbs and is pushed back a few steps.

The instant his thumbs fold, sand bursts from his chest and shatters more of his cloth into ribbons. The swarm folds faster, focuses immediately, and two tufts of sand become elongated and pointed bullets, each aimed to penetrate the joint of her wings.

You don’t deserve the air…
