Family Trade

Shuramine gazed at his mother, listening to her awesome speech of....awesome. He shot up when she said that they were going to start the first technique, but quickly drooped back to the ground when she said it would be boring and stupid.

He didn't like stuff that was boring and stupid.

He started to breath in and out with his mother and sister.

Bailey laughed a bit, breaking her concentration when Amaya complained but continued. "Now, try to take longer, fuller breaths. Concentrate on that actual breath, not just the action." Bailey sighed and took in a deep breath as an example before calling them out again. "Breath in, and breath out." She closed her eyes for a second concentrating. "The others aren't doing this because they aren't properly training. Proper training starts with the boring stuff and gets to the fun. Understand?"

Amaya nodded, now seeing the potential in the words. She took a similar stance to the one Bailey was in and began a similar breathing pattern. She closed her eyes to concentrate more. She focused on the cool breeze blowing through her hair, and the sounds of birds chirping nearby. She pushed all negative thoughts out of her head, and simply...breathed.

After a moment of breathing, Shuramine began to grow restless. He shot up like a bullet. "Alright mom, we've been breathing for like, 2 minutes. I'm pretty sure we can fire bend now, see?" he said, making a fire bending position. A small spark, this time bigger than the last one, came out of his fist. "Didja see that, mom?!" he yelled.

Bailey watched her children as they breathed, smiling at their progress until Shuramine stood up. Shaking her head she watched Shuramine try to make a bigger spark. "Darling, please. This is important. I understand that you want to learn how to bend quickly, but first you must learn how to control the fire you bend." She looked down at her own hand as she started a small flame almost the size of his. "You see, fire is good. It can change thins into edible food, warm a cold night, and in small amounts heal a person. However, if you can't control it, it will control you." Bailey sparked the flame as she spoke, keeping control of it but showing the kids a small bit of the terror in it. She waited till both of them were looking at her before throwing the fire at one of the targets. The target sparked and lit on fire, bursting into a full blaze before going out. "You see, if you can't control the fire within you, you wont be able to control the fire you see." she said as she turned back to them.

Amaya felt a little bit of guilt as her mother demonstrated the power of fire. She had never cared about the danger. She always felt happy when she fire bended, and she had never burnt anything down or gotten in trouble. But seeing the demonstration made Amaya realize that fire bending is more than just shooting flames out of your fists. It takes self control. Amaya nodded, and took her stance again, trying to clear all of her thoughts from her mind as she breathed in and out slowly, the breeze blowing her hair into her face. It took a lot of effort to not move and push the hair away.

"Alright, I guess." Shuraamine said, sitting back down. He focused on the sounds of the hawks circulating the air, freely letting his thought drift out of his mind.

Bailey relaxed a bit seeing her children listen to her. "However, I understand that you may get into a fights and things during school. I don't want you to be totally defenseless until you learn to fire bend correctly, so." Bailey stood and walked over to the flaming target. Concentrating, she doused the flames and put a new target up. "Let's have a bit of fun for a moment." She said as she picked up her bow and grabbed two similar looking training bows. She handed the black one to Shuramine and the dark brown to Amaya. "Take care of these, you will only get one while we are training, and they may be the only bow you have for a while."

Amaya looked at the bow sitting in her hands. A real bow, not like the little toy bow she had bought from a little shop. The wood was smooth to the touch, and the grip was soft, easy to hold on to. The light bark was beautiful, carved of what was likely birch wood. Amaya pulled and released the string a little, not enough to do any damage to the bow. She felt the recoil, and smiled happily. Then she noticed something carved into the wood. It took her a second to read the words, but she finally read With great power comes great responsibility. Amaya ran her hands along the surface of the words, feeling how perfectly they were engraved. She smiled and looked up and Bailey, then gently set the bow down and ran up to her, hugging her. "Thank you, mommy!" she said.

Shuramine gazed at the black bow his mother had given him. "Mom, i'll admit these are pretty cool, but don't you think we would be better, and cooler, if we had swords, too?" He said, looking back at his wooden training sword. He looked at Amaya, and how excited she was to have the now. "By the way, she's obsessed with bows. Like, really. If you haven't noticed." He said, smiling.
