Brief History: Growing up in a fishing town isn’t exactly an exciting childhood. Unless of course you’re Chen Tai-ning, that is. They say that as a baby he would always be smiling and that he had cured an old woman’s sickness by making her laugh. This old woman later died to health complications, and Chen’s healing abilities were discredited on the spot. But Chen stayed happy growing up with a non bending father, and a bending mother. He learned practical fishing town skills from his father for most of the week like fishing and how to swim, while his mother taught him how to bend. He stopped bending practice at an early age, however and didn’t learn anything useful til he was 12, and his grandfather visited from his home in the mainland and forced Chen to learn bending “the right way”. He was basically tortured and burnt until he learned to control his bending abilities. Chen hates his grandfather for this and refuses to admit that if not for him he wouldn’t be able to bend at half the power he’s at now.
When Chen Tai-ning turned 14 and a half he joined work at a kitchen, as an assistant chef. He basically just kept fires going for a while but eventually got to make side dishes. It was this job that showed him the tourists of the world he never saw before. He would talk to them and hear of these wonderful places around the world. He’d forget to serve patrons and just talk to them, which after 3 years got him fired, literally. His boss forced him out of the restaurant with a wave of flames. Now almost a man and with high expectations, Chen needs only one thing to start his journey around the world to see all the wonderful things he’s heard about. A boat.
